This Newbery Medal-winning novel named The Island of the Blue Dolphins PDF for young readers, written by one of America’s most celebrated children’s authors Scott O’Dell has become a classic of historical fiction for young readers. It’s a wonderful, inspirational, exhilarating story full of discoveries about creatures of beauty and wildness and teeming variety, but it’s also a tale of deep melancholy with a regretful finale.
This book is based on a true story. Off the coast of California, there is a place known as the “Island of the Blue Dolphins.” It is now known as San Nicolas Island and is owned by the United States Navy. The book’s main character, Juana Maria, was based on a real person who lived alone on San Nicolas Island for 18 years until being rescued and dying only a few weeks later at the Santa Barbara Mission in California. The Island of the Blue Dolphins PDF Summary:
The Island of the Blue Dolphins tells the story of Karana, an Indian child who is abandoned on a Pacific Island. She learns the skills she’ll need to live on her own for years. Think of a survival narrative along the lines of Robinson Crusoe or The Hatchet.
This teenage girl must construct a shelter, fight off wild dogs, get food, and mourn her brother’s death. I couldn’t put this story down as a kid because it was so brilliantly written. The novel is free of profanity and sex. Wild dogs and hunting are the only sources of violence.
There is some indigenous superstition about women not using weapons at first, but this is swiftly dispelled with little religious thought. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is at least eighteen years old and can read a novel. Check out more content related to Classic Books on our website for a free read.
