She lives on a farm with her aunt’s family. The farm is not being run properly because every member of the Starkadders family has some emotional problem that stems from their hatred, fear or ignorance of something. Flora decides to help them using her common sense.

Thus, her mission in the book is to help these people learn how to live in the 20th century, with metropolitan values.
