Bartleby, the Scrivener is written by Herman Melville and was originally published in December 1853. This is a tragicomic-comic novel about a man who is virtually cut off from society. The narrator tries to comprehend Bartleby, but he doesn’t want to be understood: he wishes nothing more than to be left alone.
It’s not a scenario that can be tolerated in the long run, and Bartleby’s decline and fall are swift and painful. This novel was serialized anonymously in two parts in Putnam’s Magazine in November and December 1853, then reprinted with slight textual changes in his The Piazza Tales in 1856m. Bartleby the Scrivener PDF Summary:
Bartleby is an employee; his past, history, and personal circumstances are uninteresting to his boss, but he must have anticipated learning more about him eventually. The story begins with a description of the offices before Bartleby’s arrival. The other employees are part of what has become an informal family.
The novel is recounted from the perspective of an elderly Manhattan lawyer who deals with bonds, mortgages, and title deeds for his wealthy customers. The lawyer employs two scriveners or those who copy legal documents, whom he refers to as Turkey and Nippers.
The narrator’s sympathy, curiosity, and immense irritation, as well as the character of Bartleby, are beautifully depicted. The novella is a little, creepy classic that resonates even more strongly in today’s world, in which Bartleby’s are more readily bred. It’s worthwhile if frightening, text that’s expertly written.
